2008 Waseda University WISPJ International Symposium

“The Upside and Downside of Global Warming Side-effects on Asian Countries”

Objective

Worldwide countermeasures for global warming are rapidly changing. After a decline following the enactment of the Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992 and the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, the international political momentum behind such measures is once again building strong momentum.

As these two trends advance, we must closely examine the secondary effects of and reactions to the measures for global warming that have influenced and can be expected to influence the developing countries especially in the Asian region. This is significant for predicting the future direction of global warming politics and important in terms of constructing a sustainable society in Asian countries.

Given this understanding, this symposium intends to portray the advantageous and the disadvantageous, or the welcome and the unwelcome, aspects of global warming on the developing Asian countries, from the dual viewpoint of those countries and Japan.
